The Thinking Maps approach provides a structured and visual framework that empowers Deaf students to harness their unique potential and become co-creative learners.
Deaf students, despite their auditory challenges, have innate thinking tools that are just as potent as those of their hearing counterparts. These thinking tools encompass critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. However, to fully realize their potential, Deaf students require tailored methods of expression and learning that go beyond traditional educational approaches. This is where Thinking Maps come into play.
Thinking Maps offer a comprehensive system of visual tools that facilitate the development of thinking and communication skills. By employing visual, structured representations of thoughts, ideas, and concepts, Deaf students can more effectively engage with complex subjects and convey their own understanding.
Sign Language
Sign language is one of the 12 official languages in South Africa. There is a need to empower deaf tertiary students with critical thinking skills.
Boland College, in collaboration with Marvelous Minds, is at the forefront of empowering Deaf students with these invaluable thinking skills.
Through the innovative Thinking Maps approach, this partnership aims to build bridges over communication barriers and equip Deaf students with the skills they need to read with insight, analyse information critically, and articulate their thoughts.
This will allow these students to actively participate in discussions and collaborative projects, ensuring that their voices are heard and valued.
